Boat ID: USS Sea Cat Successful Patrol: Yes Number of Freighters or Tankers Sank: 2 (Boston Maru, 5500 tons, Eifuku Maru, 3500 tons) Warships/Capital Ships Sank: 0 Total Tonnage Destroyed: 9000 tons Special Assignment Completed: NA Refit Time: 1 month (1 system damaged), back in service July 1945 Awards Requested: Battle Star, Sub Combat Patrol Insignia
Sea Cat left Pearl Harbor on April 3rd, 1945. One week later, as the boat passed through the Midway Island area of operations, a Catalina overflew us, came back around, and dropped a #%^@!! bomb off our starboard bow! ^!#%#%@ rookie pilot! We suffered multiple crew injuries, none of them very serious thankfully, and the starboard bow tube doors were jammed shut. I was tempted to fire on the plane, but did not do so.
We reached the Japanese home waters near the end of the month. While moving to position ourselves for our wolfpack assignment, we encountered a pair of cargo ships with 2 escorts. After an extended attack and pursuit, both targets were sunk. I'm not sure which crews were greener - the escorts or us! It took 10 torpedoes, 3 separate attacks, and an actual evasion of a circular torpedo run to finally sink the two cargo ships. We also lost our radio (again!) which meant we couldn't coordinate with our pack.
We saw nothing but the occasional formations of aircraft (ours) for the rest of our station time, and headed home with no other troubles. For the second time, we made Pearl wonder what happened, and surprised them by coming home.
We only lost the radio, so the boat should be good to go in July. It was incredible news to learn that Germany had surrendered when we came back to Pearl. It doesn't look like Japan will do the same anytime soon...

April 2nd 1945 Having left Pearl and out to sea, we headed for another Empire patrol.
April 11th 1945 Reached patrol area and had zero contact with the enemy.
April 22nd 1945 Just after lunch, contact was made and after identification; the Taijin Maru was to be our first target and its escort our first evasion. I risked waiting to evening, but it paid off. After surfacing at medium range and readying the Mk18’s from the aft tubes, all four fish were targeted towards the freighter; only one torpedo struck the hull, resulting in the ship listing to port and the coup de grace had been completed.
The Green Bay avoided detection and so we slipped away into the night and I was pleased we still had a full compliment of bow torpedoes ready to use against larger targets.
Unfortunately, that was the last contact we made with the enemy during the patrol.
May 11th 1945 With little fuel left, I decided to head for home, even though we had nearly a full compliment of torpedoes onboard and it all seemed a waste of time.
May 21st 1945 Arrived back at Pearl Harbor, after traversing the rest of the Tropic of Cancer with no contact on our way back to the Hawaiian Islands. Refit will be completed during June.
USS Green Bay will be ready for the July patrol.

USS Skipjack Patrol Assignment #11 : China Sea Successful Patrol: Yes Special Assignment Completed: NA
Freighters or Tankers Sank: 1 Warships Sank: 0 Capital Ships Sank: 0 Total Tonnage Destroyed: 4,200
Ships Sank: April 24th, 1945 - Taiyo Maru (F) 4200t
Ships Damaged:
Awards Requested: Battle Star for Sub
Refit Time: Standard, ready for patrol July 1945
Notes: Only one enemy contact on this patrol; a small, unescorted freighter.
Commander Osbourne's Lucky Charm seemed to provide a batch of superior torpedoes but unfortunately a very limited enemy presence prevented him from firing many.
