January 2nd 1945 Having left Pearl and out to sea, we headed for the China Sea again. With the waters being shallow, there would be no possibility of avoiding detection by exceeding test depth, making the additions of the new torpedo and NAC jammer welcome equipment in avoiding any escorts.
January 12th 1945 Reached patrol area and have not had any contact with the enemy.
January 21st 1945 Just after lunch, contact was made and after identification; the Nikko Maru was to be our first target. After surfacing at close range and readying the gun crew, a large salvo was fired; resulting in the ship listing to port. A single MK18 was fired and caused the coup de grace.
February 2nd 1945 We had to wait nearly two weeks for our next contact. Early evening we ran into two frigates and an escort. We surfaced and moved into long range and let lose with all six bow torpedoes. Of the three aimed at the large freighter, two of them hit whilst the other started on a dangerous circular run and then went out to sea. The two mk14’s hit both sides of centre and the Asuka Maru sank quickly. The two aimed at the smaller freighter ran well, but only one rewarded us with an explosion, and the Nichiro Maru came to a stop. The escort was hit by an MK14, which exploded amidships and ensured the escort made its way beneath the waves. After successfully employing the NAC jammer, the escort extended its search area and left the crippled ship, which allowed the gun crew to finish her off.
February 17th 1945 Just before midnight, we made contact with a single ship. I got her in close and surfaced, to allow the gun crew to exhaust the remaining ammo and sink the Batopaha Maru.
February 19th 1945 With little fuel left, I decided to head for home, even though we had nearly a full compliment of torpedoes onboard.
February 24th 1945 Arrived back at Pearl Harbor, after traversing the rest of the Tropic of Cancer with no contact on our way back to the Hawaiian Islands. Refit will be completed during March.
USS Green Bay will be ready for the April patrol.
