Boat ID: Tiger Shark Successful Patrol: Yes Number of Freighters or Tankers Sank: 2 Warships Sank: 0 Total Tonnage Destroyed: 10,700 Special Assignment Completed: N/A Refit Time: 1 month Awards Requested: Battle Star
Welcomed new XO William Bobson, on his first trip to Japan.
Encountered a minefield early in our patrol around the island, barely made it through in one piece. Encountered a destroyer with escort, let it go by. Encountered 2 freighters under escort, sank Tonan (9900), lost the other one. Finally, encountered 1 small freighter under escort, sank it (Himeno, 800). Her escort damaged our forward torp doors and SJ radar. Disappointed in a rather slow patrol, we headed home.

Boat ID: USS Sea Cat Successful Patrol: Yes Number of Freighters or Tankers Sank: 3 (Toyo Maru, 6900 tons, Nittai Maru, 6500 tons, Tokiwasan Maru, 1800 tons) Warships/Capital Ships Sank: 1 (Escort, 1200 tons) Total Tonnage Destroyed: 16,400 tons Special Assignment Completed: NA Refit Time: 2 months (1 Hull Damage, 1 system damaged), back in service April 1945 Awards Requested: Silver Star, Battle Star, Sub Combat Patrol Insignia
Encountered lone freighter Toyo Maru, engaged and sunk with Deck Gun.
Near the end of the patrol, intercepted two freighters with escorts. Sank Nittai Maru and an escort, and damaged Tokiwasan Maru with a full salvo of torpedoes from all tubes. Submerged and evaded detection, and re-acquired the damaged Maru. Sank her with 3 more torpedoes, but this time we were found by the escorts. After an extended attack with depth charges, they broke off their efforts.
Sea Cat took minor damage, but the hull plating was buckled and we lost our radio. The loss of contact concerned Pearl Harbor, but we arrived at base on schedule.

24 January 1945 The three-sub wolfpack consisting of Launce, Quakerfish, and Walafoo enter Pearl Harbor. None of the subs show any battle damage. Standard Report FormatBoat ID: USS Launce Successful Patrol: Yes Number of Freighters or Tankers Sank: 1 Number of Non-Capital Warships Sank: 1 Capital Ships Sank: 0 Total Tonnage Destroyed: 3,500 Special Assignment Completed: NA Refit Time: 1 Month, ready Mar 45 Awards Requested: Combat Patrol Insignia for new crew Gold Star to Combat Patrol Insignia for other crew 2nd Battle Star for Submarine Narrative:
Launce left Pearl Harbor the morning of 4 December in company with Quakerfish and Wallagoo to conduct wolfpack operations near the Philippines. Other than news of the surprise German offensive in Europe and Halsey’s loss of several ships to a hurricane in the Philippine Sea, the transit to our patrol area was uneventful. Little did we know that was to be the case for the entire patrol. The day after New Years we made our only contact of the patrol, a small (3,100 ton) troop ship escorted by a 28-GO type escort vessel. Moving into medium range, I fired two MK14s at each of the targets, being rewarded with hits on both. Both ships split up and sank immediately. It seems that all the US Naval air activity in the Philippines was making Tojo reluctant to show his face. By the 4th of January, Cmdr Langley of Wallagoo, as senior officer present determined that despite lack suitable targets we had best start our return trip to avoid being caught short of fuel. Returning by way of the Carolines and Gilberts, we didn’t run across any more Japanese, arriving back at Pearl on 24 January. Suffering no casualties or damage, Launce should be resupplied and ready to sail again in March. Respectfully submitted, Michael Bowers, LCdr, USN, commanding USS Launce
