August 2nd 1944
Having left Pearl and out to sea, we headed for the Philippines for the fourth and probably last time, as I had heard that our Subron would be focussed upon the Empire area soon. Again, we would be part of a wolfpack and hopefully encounter a few convoys and make up for the last few patrols in the same waters.
August 14th 1944
Reached patrol area and have not had any contact with the enemy or our own wolfpack.
August 15th 1944
In contact with the wolfpack during the afternoon, we made our way to the designated area and waited till we got first sight of the convoy. Brooks identified three juicy large freighters and started plotting the solution for firing, adjusting as we got into position. I decided on a full spread from bow and aft, to cause as much chaos as possible. We avoided detection whilst attempting to get in close and once in position: surfaced, fired all torpedoes and then started submerging again. The bow fish were equally divided between the two largest freighters, whilst the bow torpedoes were evenly shared between the other large freighter and an escort. The Engen was hit by all three torpedoes and sank beneath the waves quickly. Only two of the three torpedoes exploded when they hit the Arita Maru, but that was more than enough to see her sink by the stern. The Toyokuri Maru was hit with both electric eels, but this only slowed her progress rather than send her to the bottom. Only one Mk18 torpedo hit the escort and once again, it was another ship damaged but not enough. We easily avoided detection which was surprising when you consider the range we fired from, so I welcomed luck being on our side. It was very easy to travel at a reasonable distance and re-engage with the convoy, rather than take out one straggler. I decided upon a more conservative attack when our new identified targets were not so large and juicy. This time we attacked from medium range and only fired the bow tubes with a brace fired at each of the freighters. All six torpedoes hit and exploded and all three ships (Heijo Maru, Hiburi Maru, and Ryuyo Maru) sunk over differing periods of time. Unfortunately playing conservative did not pay out and lady luck had deserted us; we were detected by the escorts! Hour after hour we were hunted and attacked. During the first barrage, we took damage to the hull and we could hear something banging on deck. The next attack saw damage around the bow of the ship and tube#4 had to be made inoperable for the time being and as a result of the explosion, one of the torpedo loaders was crushed to death (Dexter Hickey). Things got even more serious when the next attack hit one of the quarters; killing one of the crew and severely wounding another, as well as damaging the hull further. Chief Willis was lucky during the next attack, when yet another explosion damaged the hull and rivets flew through the ship. One hit him with a glancing blow and whilst there was blood, the wound was superficial and Masterson fixed him up. We were either going to just get pummelled again or we risked going deeper. I took her to below test depth and this time the explosions stops and the sounds of escorts got softer as they tried to detect us further away. I called it a day and made sure we had a few days to repair and lick our wounds.
August 20th 1944
During the last four days, the Chief was patched up and got to work with his team fixing the damage. Bow tube #4 was fixed and when it was found that the AA gun had almost come loose from the ship, it was remounted, but there was nothing that could be done about the hull damage, until getting back to dock.
During the morning the wolfpack informed us that a convoy was heading our way and that we should submerge and be ready for an attack that afternoon. With four torpedoes remaining in both the bow and aft tubes, I knew that we would have to make a surface attack and therefore I ordered the crew to remain silent whilst we followed and waited till dark. Three small freighters presented themselves as targets and so a brace of Mk14’s were fired at each of two of the targets and pair of Mk18’s were each aimed at the other freighter and the escort. Three torpedoes missed, but each target was hit by at least one exploding fish and all four ships made their way down to their watery resting place on the ocean bed. Lady luck had returned again after the last fiasco and we escaped undetected.
September 13th 1944
We remained at sea with just deck gun and AA gun ammo to fire and wished for an encounter with an unescorted tanker or two, but that really is pushing your luck. A ship was spotted this afternoon, but it was escorted and we had to let it go.
September 17th 1944
With nine enemy ships chalked up and little firepower left, I decided to head for home and give the guys an extra few days of being on land.
September 27th 1944
Arrived back at Pearl Harbor, after traversing the rest of the Tropic of Cancer with no contact on our way back to the Hawaiian Islands. Refit will be completed during October and November.
USS Green Bay will be ready for the January patrol at the start of 1945

August 2nd, 1944 - Headed out to sea this morning, hoping to push the Japs one step closer to surrender by sinking a few more ships. The war seems to be swinging in our direction now, on both fronts, but we still have a long road ahead. We are sailing back to the China Sea for another mine-laying op. Once we chuck them overboard we'll start looking out for some action.
August 15th - We arrived at our drop zone this morning, and completed the deployment without incident. We're on our patrol route now, looking for trouble.
August 24th - Finally got some action this evening, around sunset we spotted a pair of small freighters with a destroyer escort. We were in a good position, and fired at both. One was hit and went under, the other was damaged but not enough. The escort went off completely in the wrong direction, and we got out of there before the skipper realized his mistake. We're going to tail the damaged ship and finish the job.
August 25th - Caught up to the damaged freighter this evening, and finished her off with another pair of torpedoes. Once again, the escort captain misread our position, and we got away clean.
September 10th - Ran into another pair of freighters today around 1100 hours. We fired a full spread from our front tubes, and managed to take down both of them. Their escorts must have gone to a better naval school than the one last week, as they were able to drop a few barrels our way before we made it out. No serious damage to any of the systems, but the hull has a new dent or two that will have to be pulled out when we get back.
September 17th - Running low on fuel, heading home.
September 30th - Pulled into Pearl this afternoon, and congratulated the boys on another successful cruise. Going to be laid up an extra few weeks due to the hull damage, looks like we'll be ready to sail again before Christmas. We're always glad to help Santa deliver a few more fish to the Emperor!
