Patrol Description: The SS MAKO left Pearl on 6/3/44 with a happy heart. Commander Frank had tried to convince the CO that the Empire would be better hunting grounds, but his orders to patrol the Marshall Islands was fine. This is where he sank the CV Kaga last patrol, so…. At first, the cruise was unspectacular. The crew spent the time training for crash dives and maintaining the systems on the sub. At 20:40hrs on 6/24/44, a Saturday, they spotted the smoke of multiple ships. Commander Frank closed to medium range on a partly cloudy night. He fired 3xMK-14 steam torpedoes at a large freighter and one MK-18 electric eel at each of the smaller freighters. The first to arrive were the speedier 14’s, with a solid thunk indicating a hit, with no explosion. Next up, the MK-18 electrics. One hit and damaged the 2100t Freighter Keizen Maru. The 3300t Freighter Toshin Maru was also struck. The Toshin rolled over to port and sank immediately. The escort was not too dangerous, so the Mako re-loaded and re-acquired the convoy 7:10 hrs. This time they report seeing 3 smaller ships and fired a total of 4 MK-18’s at medium range while submerged. No hits were observed.
Again, the escort was not able to place the Mako, they re-loaded again and found the convoy at 22:05hrs. This time they set up a surfaced, medium range attack. They fired 3xMK-14’s at the 6800t Passenger/freighter Nichiyu Maru and 3xMK-14’s at the 7300t Tanker San Pedro Maru. They report 5 hits and one dud. The San Pedro was hit three times and sank in less than 3 minutes. The Nichiyu received two hits and was seen to slow, but the approaching escort meant she could not be claimed as sunk. This time the escort scored a few near misses and damaged the radio, hydrophones and fuel tanks. The crew had two members receive minor wounds, but the 3rd Officer was hit in the upper leg by a part of the radio and needed serious attention. This escort had to be an elite crew, because they just kept pounding the Mako. The log reports almost 20 separate damaging hits. The hull was pounded and diesel engines #1 and #2 were destroyed. Also destroyed was the deck gun and AA (20mm) gun. After hours of intense pounding, the Mako was finally able to escape. The 3rd Officers wound was very serious, but he was stable and they still had “bullets in the gun” to quote the captain, so they continued the patrol. They chose not to mess with that convoy any further due to the obvious quality of the escorts! After a week of foggy, drizzly weather, the 30th dawned bright and sunny. Temps were reported in the 90’s by the crew. At 10:30 hours, the Mako spotted another convoy and closed to attack. They attacked at medium range, submerged. They fired all their remaining torpedoes at three large targets. They hit the 10500t tanker Ominesan Maru with 1 MK-14 and she exploded and sank quickly. They hit the 5200t Freighter Nichinan Maru with 2MK-14 and 1MK-18 torpedoes. The Nichinan sank by the stern. The escort for the convoy found the Mako and started pounding her. It appears that her fuel tanks that were previously damaged were torn open again and this led the enemy right to her. No matter what her crew tried, they were on to her instantly. Near the end, it appears Commander Frank was hit in the head by a pipe that had broken and was seriously injured. The log book ends there. The SS-Mako (SS-69) made 9 war patrols (failing to return from #9). She sank 24 enemy ships, including the CV Kaga and several large tankers. The total tonnage sunk by the Mako was 142,100 tons. Her commander turned down a promotion to Captain and a desk ashore to lead this, their final, cruise. The Mako had 6 Battle Stars. Her commander had the Navy Cross w/Gold Star, Silver Star and Bronze stars.
Signed:
Commander, Charles Frank Commander SS-454 Mako This report was filed upon the finding of the SS-69 in deep waters off of the Marshall Islands. We thank Dr. Bollard and his crew for finding the Mako and retrieving her logbook and other items.

Another good patrol for USS Humunuku.
Jun 18, 1944 Detected a ship under escort. Waited until night then attacked both ship and escort. Torpedoes are so good I only fired 2 at each, which was enough.
Jun 24, 1944 Spotted two ships under escort. Tried to follow into the night but lost them! Very frustrating.
Jun 30, 1944 One ship under escort. Fired 2 at each and sunk both. Torpedoes are working well.
Jul 5, 1944 Spotted warship CL Agano 5500t at night. Didn't want to let this get away, so fired 4, and 2 at one of the escorts. That did the trick. Sunk both. Was able to avoid detection.
Jul 13, 1944 Spotted one ship under escort. Very small, but why not? Fired 2 at each. Freighter sunk. Escort took a hit but did not sink. They detected us, but we only sustained some flooding before escaping. Decided to break off and head home.
Jul 28, 1944 Returned to Pearl with 3 ships, 1 warship and 3 escorts.
Torpedoes fired: 20 Torpedoes on target: 16 Torpedoes failed to detonate: 2 (12.5%)
USS Humunuku will be ready for patrol in Sept
