Patrol: Marshals
The USS Humunuku's best patrol! There was good hunting in the Marshals. Improved torpedoes gives us more confidence to attack.
Apr 10, 1944 Enemy plane spotted us during transit but our good experience allowed us to crash dive without harm.
Apr 12, 1944 Detected two ships and an escort. Night surface at medium range, attacked and sunk both ships and escort. Torpedoes were excellent. Finished off the Tanker with deck gun.
Apr 14, 1944 Spotted a lone freighter. Used deck guns, but aim was not so good. Got impatient and finished with a torpedo.
Apr 21, 1944 Followed a convoy. Four torpedoes sunk a large tanker. Fired 2 at a smaller freighter which must have been carrying ammo since it blew sky high. Escort must have been rattled because we escaped detection.
Continued to follow convoy. Decided to sneak in close to get maximum effectiveness from remaining torpedoes. Not a good choice as we were detected. Sustained some depth charging but received only minor damage.
Continued to follow and again moved in close. This time undetected. The Fates were smiling on us as we found ourselves staring at two enormous prizes. Spread remaining torpedoes between them and sunk both. Such a contrast to the early years when lady luck was not on our side.
With tubes empty, we cut our patrol short.
Apr 29, 1944 Returned to Pearl with 7 ships and 1 escort.
Torpedoes fired: 24 Torpedoes on target: 18 Torpedoes failed to detonate: 3 (16.7%)
USS Humunuku will be ready for patrol in June
