Special Notes:
-------------------------------------------------------------
August 9th - 1300 After the first permission, after our first mission aboard the Poseidon, we left the port towards the Marshalls Islands.
August 18th - 0021 Shortly after our first waypoint, at 250 knots full south of Ware island, a signal from the bridge indicated our first visual contact. Two small freighters, after identification, was a Toyo and a Renzan. Quickly at the combat station for a night surface attack at medium range. 2 torpedoes were fired in the direction of the Toyo while the other 4 of the front tubes went to the Renzan. The latter was hit by 100% of the floating bombs. Three of these exploded and caused the loss of the Renzan. A few hundred feet away, the remaining torpedoes lacked the Toyo. The escort rushed to our direction after detecting us. Unlucky, a charge exploded very close to the submarine causing good damage to the hull (2x) and caused flooding. Luckily, the crew limited the damage. The escort seemed to have lost our trace and returned to the road to the Toyo. After catching our breath, we continued our mission.
August 26th - 0434 Several calm days succeeded one another until a contact raised by the radioman. The contact was only 50 miles and got closer to us. Time to position us and properly identify these. Again a small freighter accompanied by a larger and an escort. Four torpedoes of the aft torp. Was launched on the Kamogawa and none on the very small Chinaya. The 3/4 of the torpedoes exploded on the hull and opened the freighter in two. An escort not far away went into hunting mode while we were quiet on the spot in silence. Again, we were touched again. The Hull took another damage as well as the diesel engine 1. Once the day came back, the engine team tried unsuccessfully to repair the engine, but we will have to wait to be at the port.
September 11th 1625 New contact, again visual. Once again there are a few boats, some armed. As we are in broad daylight, we dive! We put ourselves at medium range to identify and as usual, 4 torpedoes on the most imposing, the Pacific, and two on the small Taga. This one was missed and the Pacific, it, was reached by 2 torpedos duds. Without being detected, we positioned ourselves for a second attack, with 4 torpedoes on the Pacific only. This time, two torpedoes exploded and it was enough for the boat to calmly take water and rejoin the bottom of the sea, in no case, the escort did not pass near us. A few hours later, we were far away ...
The rest of the journey towards the base was very quiet. The crew is due for a rest, but especially the Poseidon which needs repair.

Patrol Description: A rainy start after we stayed in port an extra day, because we did not want to leave on the 13th. August 14th we left port. We arrived in the Marshall Island area on 27/08/43 and began our patrol.
All was quiet until 08/09/43, when we spotted a small convoy of two ships and an escort. We radioed the contact report to Pearl and received permission to attack. I closed to medium range and fired 4 bow torpedoes at the Largest freighter, scoring 3 hits and watching her blow sky high! I fired two bow torpedoes at the smaller ship, hitting with one and damaging her. The escort was good and rattled our cage pretty well. We suffered through at least 3 rounds of attack, losing our deck gun and Electric #4. We did not know until later how badly our hull was damaged. When we saw the scars, we were very happy we had moved to a Gato class boat! After we escaped the destroyer, we did what repairs we could and reloaded. We re-engaged at about 20:00hrs and fired 2 stern torps at the freighter and 2 stern torps at the DD. We had one hit scored on the freighter, sending her deep. Our soundman claims he heard two solid thunks from the DD, but no explosions. I have to believe him, because the DD came at us with a vengeance! He hit us multiple times again and it took a long time to shake him. All said and done, we lost our radio and the 20mm AA gun. The ships we sank were identified as the: Atlantic Maru 5900t Freighter Ehime Maru 4700t Freighter The next few days went quiet while we repaired the smaller damage and continued our hunt. Just as we were getting ready to call it quits and head for the barn, we ran into 2 tankers escorted by a minelayer. Watching the minelayer, I assumed he was manned by some elite crew, so I decide to take him out in my opening salvo! I fired 3 bow torpedoes at the minelayer from medium range submerged because of the bright sunlight. I hit him right in the engine room with one torpedo and he broke in half. I fired 2 bow torpedoes at the larger tanker, hearing a solid thud, but no explosion. I fired one torpedo at the small tanker, again hearing a thud, but seeing no tower of water. The minelayer we sank was the Okinoshima (4400t) These ships immediately changed course and escaped while we tried to re-load and keep up. That was the last of our contacts and we slipped back into Pearl on the night of the 9th October, 1943 Time to head out and get my ashes hauled.
Signed:
Commander, Charles Frank

August 4, 1943 - Got a bit of a late start this patrol, we had to wait a few days extra for a part for the targeting computer. Finally sailed out this morning, heading to the China Sea. Lets hope that the Japs have a bit harder time finding us on this trip.
August 14th - Arrived at patrol area and began our hunt. We got lucky soon after, spotting a lone freighter this afternoon. We moved in for a close gun attack. Two salvoes made short work of the enemy ship, which was identified as the Onoe.
August 26th - Encountered two ships just after dark this evening, tanker Ichiyu and small freighter Akashisan. They were escorted by an enemy destroyer. We closed to medium range and fired a forward spread. All 4 fish targeting the tanker hit, and she exploded with such a fireball that Tojo probably saw it in Tokyo. The freighter only took one of the two torps sent her way, which damaged her but was not enough to sink her. We slipped away before the destroyer could get a bead on us, and will try to pick up the freighter's trail.
August 27th - We found the damaged freighter this morning, all alone and running for home. A gun salvo finished her off.
September 13th - Encountered another pair of escorted ships this morning, passenger ship Ryusei and small freighter Sengo. We fired 3 torpedoes at each from medium range. 2 of the fish hit the Ryusei and sent her under, but all 3 of the torps fired at the freighter passed in front of her. She must have been slowing down as we locked in our firing solution. The escort DD had our number for a while, and we suffered some damage to the hull along with XO Vasquez bumping his head on the bulkhead. That hard noggin of his probably did as much damage to the boat as the Jap depth charges, but he was hurting for awhile. We finally gave that DD the slip, but electric engine #4 was knocked out and couldn't be fixed. The radio is on the fritz as well. We are nearing the end of our patrol anyway, so hopefully it won't be an issue.
October 2nd - Made it back to Pearl today, HQ was beginning to wonder what happened since we couldn't call in. The boys in the pen are not too happy we came back with more dents for them to fix, but I told em we are doing our jobs so they can do theirs. Time to get some shut eye, the Tiger Shark will be grounded until New Years. Happy holidays boys!
