May 6th 2200
Leaving the port for the first patrol taking place on the Marianas. We didn't loose a second to start on board training and testing the limits of our beautiful high tech vessel to be sure we are living on the edge and always on alert for the next weeks which is the unknown for a many of us.
May 22th - 0940
800 miles north of Guam, Pharmacist Huff requested the authorization to execute an emergency surgery on a Diesel team crewman. The guy suffers from an appendicitis and without intervention, within the next 24 hours, he'll be the first casualty on the Poseidon, and without ever having fighting he ennemy.
May 25th - 2009
Contact at 234 degrees. CONVOY. Taking position at medium range to aim for the nearest targets, a small tanker and two freighter ships. For the first attack, I've split the forward tubes, 3 torps on the small tanker and 3 on the smallest freighter. I was lucky with the tanker, two torpedos hited it and separated it (Chiyoda 4700t). The freighter was touch by the 3 torpedos heading to him in the COMPLETE silence while we were diving. The stress level raised with the uncertainty of our power knowing a battleship was bearing on us. A chance, it didn't seem to have an idea of our position based on the distance of the underwater explosions. After a while, we tried to chase the envoy but our SJ radar couldn't get a trace of them. We had no choice to continue the patrol to the south.
May 31th - 1357
While I was lunching, the officer on the deck identify an alone Japanese unarmed contact. A small freighter. We just head toward him at short range and sunk it after three gun shots (Unkai - 2700t), we went full speed for a while to ensure no escorts called by the ship could find us.
June 11th - 0316
Radar operator identified a small signal. We headed for the interception at 200 miles north-east of the Carolines Islands, we stayed on surface at standard range, identified the ships, a small tiny freighter with escorts. According to the last result, I decided to send a complete load of torps, using all of them to ensure a maximum chance of success. Six forward torpedoes were release for the escort and a second salvo the four Aft on the freighter. Quality torpedo was with me this time. On the 4 that hited the battleship, three exploded and let it on fire while it was taking water very fast (std BS - 1200t). Torpedo 7 and 10 pierce literally the freighter who stop right way and dive to disappear like a magic trick (Ploko - 1500t).
We dive pretty fast, and with one escort down, it was easier to take a good position, stay quiet and just let the other escorts trying to hear the sound they were looking for between their charges music but being again undetected, a slip away of them and head 1.4.0. to our way back to home base by june 30th to refit.

Patrol Description: On a cloudy Monday, the 3rd of May, The Angelfish set out for her patrol to the Philippines. Because of her experience last cruise, her AA teams were manned and ready from the get-go! We saw nobody and nothing until we were in the area of Wake Island.
On Monday the 17th of May, we found a convoy. It was just after dark and we set-up a textbook attack, from medium range, surfaced. I fired 3 torpedoes at a large tanker (Kyokuei Maru), 2 torpedoes at a large freighter (Shonan Maru) and one torpedo at a small passenger ship (Tainen Maru). All 3 torpedoes hit target #1, but 2 were duds. The remaining torpedo took a chunk out of her side, but did not sink her. I had two hits on target #2, one was a dud. The remaining one damaged her pretty good, but she still floated. Target #3 got her one torpedo right in the engine room. She rolled over and sank in minutes. (3200t Passenger) The escort appeared confused, so we were able to slip away and re-load. Sadly, the escort did not leave the two damaged ships, but I pressed the attack. I fired 2 torpedoes at each target from my stern tubes. I scored 3 hits, but both of the hits on target #2 were duds. I thought they got this problem cleaned up? Anyways, I got a clean hit on target #1 that blew her bow clean off. She settled quickly after that. (10,600t Tanker). Again the escort was not super good, and after some pretty serious flooding, we were able to escape. We reloaded and drained out the seawater, then re-attacked the last ship. We fired 3 front torpedoes and hit with 2, both were duds. The escort banged us around a bit and that caused us to lose the contact with the freighter. On May 30th at about 19:30hrs, we found a single ship, un-escorted. We closed to close range and let fly with our new 5” gun. It was over pretty quick and we identified our catch as the 2900t Freighter, Sakae Maru. Next up, on Wednesday June 2nd at about 11:00hrs, we found a large freighter tooling along with escort. We submerged and fired 4 stern shots from medium range. We scored 1 hit, 2 damage. The escort missed us completely, so we re-engaged. She was still escorted, so we fired 2 torpedoes at her, again from medium range. 1 hit, but it was a dud. The escorts got closer this time, but we escaped quickly. A little later we found her again and this time her escort was somewhere else! We surfaced and closed range. At this time we found our 20mm AA gun was totally destroyed, but that did not harm us now. We attacked with the 5” at close range and set her to the bottom. We identified her as the Butopaha Maru (6,000t Freighter). The next few nights and days were spent repairing minor things and getting some rest. Finally, on June 14th, we found a convoy at 9:40hrs. We closed to medium range and set-up our approach. I chose to fire 1 torpedo at #1, a small freighter. At target #2, a small passenger liner, I also sent one torpedo. At target #3, a large freighter, I sent 3 torpedoes. Target #1 disappeared in a cloud of flame and dust when my torpedo hit her. I would guess she was carrying ammunition. She was identified as the Tone Maru (4,100t Freighter) Target #2 was a hit, but my torpedo failed to explode. Target #3 was hit by 1 of my 3, and just shook it off. That was the end of all my ammunition. We were hit by the escort, and nearly sunk. When we finally got away, I was amazed at the amount of damage my boat had sustained! We spent the transition back to Pearl trying to hold the old girl together and all breathed a sigh of relief when we entered the harbor. My submarine suffered enough damage to cause a 5 month re-fit.
I respectfully request a new submarine, so that I may take my crew back out as soon as possible, to wreak havoc with our little yellow friends.
Signed:
Commander, Charles Frank Commander SS-69 Angelfish
