Patrol Results Due no later than October 28th 2016.January 2nd Gentlemen, I won't take up much of your time, as I know that you are preparing to get underway. With all the changes over the past six months in regard to the Mk 14's, I can assure you that the depth Mechanism has been fully corrected and the more efficient Mk 14's will be loaded onto your boats. This should now ensure that your Mk 14 hits will actually explode more often. (MK14 dud rate is now 1-3 on D6). There have been six subs using the corrected torpedoes from Subron 9 during the past two months and the failure rate is still over 50% and this information has been passed up the line. If your success rate is higher and you are doing something different, then it is ESSENTIAL that you notify me at once. Also, we have been given the Philippines to patrol as of last month.

Boat ID: Humunuku Successful Patrol: Yes Number of Freighters or Warships Sank: 1 ship (Shimotsu Maru, 2900 tons) Capital Ships Sank: 0 Total Tonnage Destroyed: 2900 tons Special Assignment Completed: N/A Refit Time: July 43 (extended 1 month to repair 2 Hull damage) Awards Requested: Combat Patrol, Battle Star
OBSERVATIONS This patrol was disappointing for myself and the crew. I simply have to figure out how to be more accurate with the torpedoes. The dud rate was 50% (3 of 6), still atrocious. But worse was my accuracy. As is my habit, I approach to medium range but was only able to hit the mark 6 out of 16 tries. My crew deserves better of me. Perhaps I am too cautious. Perhaps my range finder is out of calibration. Perhaps my rollometer is broken.
PATROL LOG Uneventful transit to the Mariannas
March 28th, night: Detected two escorted Freighters. Approached to medium range and fired 4 torpedoes at one ship and 2 at the other. The latter missed. Two hits on the first but they were duds. The escort detected us but the damage was light and repairable. Unfortunately the ships got away.
Apri 5th, night: Detected a convoy. Approached to medium range and fired 4 torpedoes at one small freighter and 2 at a second. The later missed. One hit on the first which detonated. The freighter did not sink. The escort detected us and worked us over a bit. We were able to repair all but the SD radar. Followed the wounded ship which stayed under escort. The next night fired 4 torpedoes from medium range. This time I had better aim. Three torpedoes hit their mark. One was a dud, but the other two took care of the Shimotsu Maru (2900 t). The escort came at us with a vengeance but we were able take it.
The rest of the patrol was uneventful.
April 29th: Returned to Pearl Harbor

Number of Freighters or Tankers Sunk: 0
Capital Ships Sunk: 0
Total Tonnage Destroyed: 0
Special Assignment Completed: N/A
Submarine Damage: Fuel tanks and diesel #2 destroyed Crew Member #1 LW Crew member #2 KIA
Refit Time: 1 Month
Awards Requested: Purple Heart Crew #1 Posthumous Purple Heart Crew #2
Patrol Description: The Angelfish left Pearl on a cool day and headed for the Mariana’s. The crew was excited because of the promotions and upgrades they had received. Only one day out of Pearl, an IJN Mavis came out of the sun, completely unseen by our crew or the radar! We saw him too late to submerge and missed him with our new AA guns.
He strafed us and killed one crew and lightly wounded a second. His bombs landed close abeam and destroyed our fuel tanks and bounced diesel #2 off of her mounts. We were able to dive and avoid any further attacks, but the damage to our fuel tanks meant we needed to limp home, conserving every drop. A very unnerving attack that taught me two lessons! 1.) I must have my radar operators better trained before a cruise. 2.) I must train my AA gunners before our next cruise. I also learned that we must have the highest intensity lookouts from the moment we leave port. Time for a drink.
Signed:
Commander, Charles Frank Commander SS-69 Angelfish

30 March 1943, Pearl HarborUSS Bristlemouth enters port a month early, having had to abort her patrol due to a leaking fuel tank. Standard Report Format Boat ID: USS Bristlemouth Successful Patrol: Yes Number of Freighters or Tankers Sank: 1 Number of Non-Capital Warships Sank: 0 Capital Ships Sank: 0 Total Tonnage Destroyed: 6,000 Special Assignment Completed: NA Refit Time: 2 Months, ready Jun 43, short patrol (1 month only) due to fuel tank leak forced abort Awards Requested: 6th Battle Star for Sub 5th Gold Star to Submarine Combat Patrol Insignia for crew Purple Heart for Lt Bryce Worthington II and PhM2C Michael McGinty Narrative:A very disappointing patrol! Bristlemouth left Pearl Harbor on 3 March headed for the Japanese Home Islands but never got close. On the morning of 14 March, just past Midway, we encountered a troop transport and small freighter under escort by a Kamikaze Class DD. I ordered a submerged torpedo attack from medium range, firing two fish at the freighter (1,500 tons) and four at the troop transport (6,000 tons). A sudden change in course caused both torpedoes to miss the smaller target as well as one of the torpedoes fired at the troop ship. Of the remaining three fish, two were duds. The last torpedo fired hit the larger and it almost immediately turned turtle. The escort then made for us with a bone in his teeth and I ordered Bristlemouth deeper. The DD’s skipper was persistent, staying on us until darkness fell almost ten hours later; knocking out the periscope, SJ Radar, Diesel Engine 2, damaging the hull and fuel tanks, as well as causing extensive flooding. Both my XO, Lt Bryce Worthington II, and PhM2C Michael McGinty were injured by equipment shaken loose during the depth charging. Fortunately, neither was seriously wounded. Both are being put in for Purple Hearts. Once we slipped clear of the escort we surfaced to assess the damage and repair what we could. Unable to stop the leaking fuel, I had no choice but to abort the patrol and return to Pearl Harbor, arriving on 30 March. Despite the shortened patrol, the damage to the hull will require additional time in port. Consequently, Bristlemouth will not b ready for sea until June. Respectfully submitted, Kyle Robinson, Cdr, USN, commanding USS Bristlemouth
