"Commander Charles Kist reporting as ordered sir", says Kist as he throws a sharp salute to his commanding officer.
"Captain, I have been thinking long and hard about the memo you sent out last month. I haven't said anything to the wife about it, since she would probably never forgive me for making this decision. I would like to stay on with the Tiger Shark for another year. She's a hell of a boat, and has a great crew. They have already lost one commander, I don't want to put them through another command change so soon. Morale has been good lately, let's keep it that way. Besides, I'm not done giving the Emperor hell for Pearl."
"Thank you Charles, I think you made a massive call there and I appreciate the amount of sacrifice you are making. I will do my best to ensure you get other opportunities."

Sir! Commander Frank reporting! I have discussed the notice regarding the possibility of a promotion and the need to be moved out of the front line boats. I had dinner and a concert with my wife last night and we decided that I should take the promotion and accept a base office job. Now that I have told you that, I am certain that I would have been passed over anyways, so let's just pretend that happened and do not tell my wife that you held my promotion for another year. I need to get my boat ready for sea as soon as I can, Sir. Permission to be dismissed Sir?
"Thank you Charles, nothing like using a partial truth to lie, a leadership skill that most do not possess, are you sure you want to be passed over?"
"I am glad you are staying, I need Commanders like you and now Subron 9 can see in the new year with a very experienced team, who knows they may even fix the fish problem by then."

Early March, 1944 - Commander Lindsay arrives for his post-patrol debriefing.
"Captain - I've decided to request a shore assignment with Subron9. I know it's not likely I'll get a promotion, but even so, I feel I can do more here. I'll put my record up against anyone in the Navy, but I know the score, how I've lost my edge somehow. Maybe they are right, maybe not, but I know I would have attacked the enemy in a crippled boat and aviators on board, against orders, to prove them wrong - and that is how I know I need to stay home."
"I also know that Mr. Hanson and Mr. Shaw deserve promotions, and by staying loyal with my boat, I am holding them back. They deserve better, and I can give it to them."
"I have one of the best crews in the fleet - they deserve a skipper who can keep up with them. Sir."
I'll come up with a fresh crew list and boat and submit it for patrol in March 1944. Yeah, I didn't want to wait until July for the next patrol - and I like the end of this story.
"Alan, I really think that you should have the weekend to think about it."
"Let me just finish this off.....there you go, take this three day pass, get away and really think about what you want to do. When you come back on Monday, swing by my office and we can have a catch up. I will accept any decision you make then and not before. Now get the hell out of here and enjoy yourself.............and that's an order."

Sir!
Commander Frank reporting! If I may have a moment? I see by my orders, I am to patrol the Marshall Islands again. Sir, may I respectfully request a new area of operations? My crew has excelled at every challenge and I would like to request a patrol of the Empire? I think that I can help our war effort with a successful patrol in that area! Thank you for your time!

"Unfortunately, that is not possible at this time. All I can say, is that this will be the last time that you will have a Marshall Islands patrol. Changes are on the near horizon and other patrol areas will come under our area of operation. Apologies Frank, but you will just have to suck this one up for the very last time."
Sir! Thank you for the consideration! The Mako is happy to hit the Marshalls again and expect to lessen the ability for the Japanese to wage war. If you will excuse me, sir. I have to get back to the boat and oversee torpedo loading!
