Patrol Results Due no later than October 7th 2016.October 1stGentlemen, I won't take up much of your time, as I know that you are preparing to get underway. With all the changes last month in regard to the Mk 14's, I am assured that the depth Mechanism has been fully corrected and the more efficient Mk 14's will be loaded onto your boats. This should now ensure that your Mk 14 hits will actually explode more often. October 15th 1942 We reached the patrol area this evening having made zero contact in nearly two weeks.
October 22nd 1942 Just after dawn, smoke was spotted on the horizon, and whilst the Green Bay was slotted into position, the two escorted ships were identified as: the Koa Maru (2000t) and the Chihaya Maru (7100t). I wasn’t prepared to wait all that time stalking till night, so I got the XO to plot solutions for a submerged attack and test out the improved Mk 14’s. Two were fired from the bow at the small net layer and the remaining four sped their way towards the much larger passenger ship. The two MK 14’s hit the smaller ship and whilst there was an audible klunk from one of them, the other did explode and rip a hole in the port side of the net layer and it took less than five minutes for the crew to jump overboard and the Koa Maru to sink below the waves. Three of the four other torpedoes were on target, however only two detonated. But that was more than enough to do the trick and I must say, there seems to be little improvement in the Mk 14’s, no matter what the Admiral says. The escort couldn’t get a bearing and focussed on picking up crew from the sea, as we made our slow and quiet escape from the scene.
October 23rd 1942 The following evening, just as I was about to get some shut eye, I was awoken suddenly and informed that the watch commander had a potential target. After leaving the relative warmth of our ship and going through the hatch into a bloody cold wind, I truly had woken up. It was a single ship with escort and so I decided we would make a surface attack and see if we could sink the cargo ship. So before we submerged, all four Mk 14’s were fired from the aft tubes, with two heading for the Keijo Maru (1000t) and two heading for its escort. Both torpedoes hit the cargo ship; one just plopped towards the sea bed and the other broke the ship in two. Only one of the Mk 14’s hit the escort and the thing actually exploded and initiated the crew jumping overboard before it went down. Needless to say, the other escorts were distracted and we dived further and slipped away
November 5th 1942 We celebrated what the Brits call Guy Fawkes night during the evening with two frigates and an escort. We surfaced and moved into long range and let lose with all six bow torpedoes and four aft torpedoes. Of the four aimed at the troop transporter, three of them hit of which two were duds. The fully functioning mk14 hit the aft side of centre and the Yanagigawa Maru (2800t) sank quickly. Two eels out of the four aimed at the small cargo ship hit but only one rewarded us with an explosion, and the back of the Jusan Maru (2100t) broke. With two fish still in the water heading for the escort, we were submerged and readying our escape. Only one torpedo hit the escort and exploded and whilst it slowed the escort considerably, it was still making its way towards us. We evaded detection easily and fled the scene of destruction rapidly, having created our own firework display once again.
November 18th 1942 Pursued false contact and completed two days of angles and dangles.
November 28th 1942 Arrived back at Pearl Harbor, after traversing the Tropic of Cancer without incident on our way back to the Hawaiian Islands. Refit will be completed during December and 42 and a wake up; we will hopefully get to see family over Christmas. USS Green Bay will be ready for the January patrol
