Patrol After Action Reports are due no later than February 25th, 2018. December 3rd 1944Good morning gentlemen, I won't take up much of your time, as I know that you are preparing to get underway. We have most patrol areas covered this month; but please just ensure that if your patrol is in the China Sea, then you will need to remember that you will be in shallow waters and as a result, you will not be able to dive towards or below test depth.
With the Japanese losing the Battle of Leyte, Tokyo would like a trophy from the US. Make sure it isn't you and your crew. Usual China Seas reminder, but above all remember your training and use the experience of your last patrol to guide you and your crew back home next month. God speed. - Captain Lyndon Woodbury - SUBRON Commander ALL Boats have been upgraded with: SJ Radar - July 1942 and Modified MK 14 and Mk 18 Torpedoes (Dud 1) - January 1944
Torpedo Loads as of July 1944: Maximum Load of 24 Torpedoes - 12 x Mk14 and 12 x Mk18 - May adjust the mix by +/- 4
Some Patrol Areas will now have ships that have Limited Escorts [14.9]. Please check out your patrol area below.

September and October 1944 December 1944 - January 1945
Boat Name and ID: USS Defiant II SS-1764 (Balao class) Commanders Name: Benjamin Sisko Patrol Assignment: China Sea Successful Patrol: Yes Number of Freighters or Tankers Sank: 1 (Mayachi-2200) Number of War Ships Sank: 0 Capital Ships Sunk: 0 Total Tonnage Destroyed: 2,200 Special Assignment Completed: N/A Refit Time: 1 month Awards Requested: SCPI, Battle Star
It seems to me that pickings are starting to become very slim. For the first 6 weeks of our patrol, we did not spot any shipping whatsoever. Finally, as we neared the end of our supplies and would have to turn back to base, we intercepted 2 small freighters with an escort. We engaged during daylight not wishing to risk losing them to wait until nightfall. I debated moving in to close range to give us a better firing solution, but in the end I decided the element of surprise was more important. Perhaps that was an error because 3 of the 4 Mk18 torpedoes missed their target. Fortunately, the last one connected and did enough damage to sink one of the freighters. The escort was not able to locate us, but we were also not able to reestablish contact and lost the opporunity for another run on the second freighter.
While the patrol was technically a success, we are disappointed we could only contribute another 2200 tons sunk for the fleet. Hopefully the hunting will be better next patrol.

23 January 1945USS Grunt enters Brisbane, a broom tied to her periscope. Standard Report FormatBoat ID: USS Grunt Dec 44-Jan 45 Successful Patrol: Yes Number of Freighters or Tankers Sank: 5 Number of Non-Capital Warships Sank: 2 Capital Ships Sank: 0 Total Tonnage Destroyed: 22,300 Special Assignment Completed: NA Refit Time: 2 months due to Hull damage, ready Apr 45 Awards Requested: Purple Heart to Lt Ronald Almay and other injured crew Navy Cross, 2nd Gold Star for Cdr Neil Balaton 2nd Silver Star to Combat Patrol Insignia for entire crew 11th Battle Star for Submarine Narrative: “Grunt may be old, but she’s dependable.” Lt Ronald Almay tells his commanding officer, Cdr Neil Balaton. As if in direct contradiction of his own assertion, Almay gently pats the cold steel coming of the bridge as though afraid of hurting it.Grunt left Brisbane for her 11th war patrol on 3 December, destination, the China Sea. En route we heard about the beginning of the campaign to take Iwo Jima. Passing the Philippines, we got the news about three tin cans lost to a typhoon on the 16th. The 17th we spent in a wild goose chase after a phantom radar contact. Anticipating a repeat of the 17th, we investigated a radar contact off the coast of Korea the evening of the 26th. This time the electronics were correct. Shortly after nightfall we engaged a small freighter (1,000 tons) and tanker (900 tons) under escort. Making a surface attack form medium range, two torpedoes each were fired at the Marus and the nearest escort. Though there was one dud, the remainder of the fish operated flawlessly. The freighter blew to smithereens and the other two targets slipped beneath the waves. We were able to slip away in the ensuing confusion. On 5 January we encountered two more freighters (5,900 tons and 2,200 tons) under escort off Formosa. As it was daylight I attacked with the rear tubes which were loaded with Mk18s. Again both vessels were sunk. However, this escort knew what he was doing, subjecting us to a depth-charging. However, once clear we were able to repair all damage. The morning of the 8th, off the coast of the Philippines we met another pair of Marus. I choose to concentrate on a large tanker of 10,500 tons, firing our remaining four Mk18s from medium range. Three missed. The escort, a 102-GO class, was more successful; damaging our hull, the hydrophones, and injuring several of the crew including Lt Almay, the latter seriously. We were able to repair the hydrophones and went in pursuit of our injured prey, catching it shortly after nightfall. This time I fired two Mk14s each at the tanker and the closest escort, an Ataka class GB. While both vessels were hit, the tanker remained afloat and after the other escorts proved unable to find us we again set off in pursuit. Shortly before sunrise I fired our last four fish at the tanker. Three hit, including a dud. But, the two functioning torpedoes proved sufficient to the task and the big tanker went down. Undetected by the escorts, we slipped away ad headed for home. Grunt entered Brisbane on 23 January. With the damage to the hull it will take an extra month in port, being ready for sea in April. Hopefully Lt Almay will be recovered from his injuries by then. Respectfully submitted, Neil Balaton, Cdr, USN, commanding USS Grunt

Boat ID: USS Rover Commanders Name: Robert Plant Patrol Assignment: Philippines (W) Special Assignment Completed: NA Successful Patrol: Yes
Number of Freighters or Tankers Sank: 1 Number of War Ships Sank: 0 Capital Ships Sunk: 0 Total Tonnage Destroyed: 5,100 (53,600)
Ships Sank: December 24th, 1944 - Tenshin Maru (T) 5,100t
Ships Damaged: NA
Refit Time: 2 months, ready for patrol April 1945
Awards Requested: Battle Star for Sub Submarine Combat Patrol Insignia for crew
Notes: We saw zero convoy action in spite of being assigned to wolfpack operations.
In fact, we saw very little action at all.
The majority of our time underway consisted of routine drills and card games.
On the evening of December 24th, we made contact with the 5,100 ton Japenese tanker, Tenshin Maru.
We attacked from medium range and at periscope depth.
I fired four Mk14 steam powered torpedoes from the aft tubes and immediately took the boat down deep.
I ordered a course away from the target at full speed.
Soon explosions were heard.
Then sounds of Tenshin Maru breaking up and sinking could be heard with the hydrophone.
The Japenese escorts frantically searched for us but we were long gone from the scene and slipped away undetected into the dark ocean depths.
