Patrol After Action Reports are due no later than October 8th, 2017. August 3rd 1943Good morning gentlemen, I won't take up much of your time, as I know that you are preparing to get underway. We have most patrol areas covered this month; but please just ensure that if your patrol is in the China Sea, then you will need to remember that you will be in shallow waters and as a result, you will not be able to dive towards or below test depth.
With the Japanese losing Attu, Tokyo would like a trophy from the US. Make sure it isn't you and your crew. Usual China Seas reminder, but above all remember your training and use the experience of your last patrol to guide you and your crew back home next month. God speed. - Captain Lyndon Woodbury - SUBRON Commander ALL Boats have been upgraded with: SJ Radar - July 1942 and Modified MK 14 Torpedoes (Dud 1-3) - August 1942

Arrived in the Marshall Islands with no troubles. Took pictures of Japanese Base X without interference.
It was a lengthy wait for any targets, but eventually a lone tanker came into sight, heading for the base. Not wanting to risk losing her, we surfaced nearby in daylight, and put enough shells into the tanker to cause it to list and turn over.
A few days later a smaller freighter was spotted at night, also heading for the base. Wanting to gauge our training, I ordered the firing of two torpedoes aft on the surface at close range. No results. Two more fish left the aft tubes. Nothing. I flipped the boat and fired two from the front. Finally, an explosion, and the small ship was broken in half.
A few more days later, and an escorted pair of small freighters left the base in the dark of night. I took a shot from medium range on the surface, three torpedoes at each freighter. The first ship was blown to bits in a large explosion, while the second was also hit, but still mobile. An escort landed a hit on the sub as we were diving, and knocked out an electric in the flood of water. The escorts did not find us, and were searching in the wrong area. We were able to take a peek and follow the freighter, and we had the opportunity to surface and use the deck gun. A few shots finished off the freighter, and we submerged to get clear as the escorts were returning. The damaged motor was quickly repaired, but we need a new 40mm gun.
No more opportunities showed up, and we returned to base without incident.

August 5th 1943 Having left Brisbane and out to sea, we headed for the Marianas, to join up with the rest of our wolf pack.
August 15th 1943 Just after dusk we reached our patrol area and immediately made contact with Grayback; the other member of our wolf pack. As midnight approached the Grayback contacted us and gave us a few minutes warning of a convoy. After the attack by my Wolf pack brother, the convoy had scattered and so I was presented with an unescorted freighter. The ship was identified as the Taimei Maru (6900t) and it slipped beneath the waves, after the gunnery team tore it apart with two full salvoes from the 3” Deck Gun. We looked for further targets till the early hours of the following morning, but to no avail.
August 29th 1943 We had been in frequent communication with the Grayback during the past fortnight, but there had been no business during that time for either submarine. Early evening contact was made and we did not contact our wolf pack partner, as this was just two ships and an escort and we would not be leaving any pickings. After the solutions were plotted, I took the Blackfish to within medium range and fired a full salvo from our tubes at the three targets before submerging back beneath the waves. All four eels fired at the Hokko Maru (8600t) hit and two of them were duds. The torpedoes that did hit, just about did enough to slowly send the ship down. Only half of the torpedoes hit the Tsukikawa Maru (4500t) and once again they both detonated, which was enough to sink her. The two Mk 14’s hit the escort and whilst just one hit and dropped below the ship, the other must have detonated near something vital as it exploded and sank quite quickly. It was a relief to see the other escorts struggling to get a bearing on us as we jinked away from them undetected.
September 7th 1943 Just after lunch, contact was made and after identification; the Kiri Maru (900t) and escorts were to be our next targets. After remaining submerged at long range, all bow tubes were fired and three Mk 14 torpedoes were aimed at each of the two viable targets. Two of the three fish hit the freighter, but only one detonated and as a result, it sank by the stern. Only one Mk14 hit the escort and whilst it resulted in the escort reducing its speed, it failed to sink. The distraction though aided in us not being detected and so we slipped away quietly and slowly.
About six days later we reached the end of our patrol and started to make our long way back to base.
September 24th 1943 Arrived in Brisbane, Australia, after traversing the rest of the Arafura Sea and finally getting to the Coral Sea, with no enemy contact on our way to the mainland, but still reflecting upon the one that got away due to torpedo failure. Refit will be completed during October.
USS Blackfish will be ready for the November patrol
