Patrol After Action Reports are due no later than July 16th, 2017. October 4th 1942Good morning gentlemen, I won't take up much of your time, as I know that you are preparing to get underway. We have all patrol areas covered this month; but please just ensure that if your patrol is in the China Sea, then you will need to remember that you will be in shallow waters and as a result, you will not be able to dive towards or below test depth. Reports received today, say that we have won the Battle at Milne Bay and the Japaneses are retreating, so Tokyo would like a trophy from the US. Make sure it isn't you and your crew.
Usual China Seas reminder, but above all remember your training and use the experience of your last patrol to guide you and your crew back home next month. God speed. - Captain Lyndon Woodbury - SUBRON Commander ALL Boats have been upgraded with: SJ Radar - July 1942 and Modified MK 14 Torpedoes (Dud 1-3) - August 1942

Seal arrives in the Yellow Sea without incident.
We are rewarded with a large freighter, all alone on a clear day. I decide to test our new torpedo warheads by firing two of them from the back. Neither comes close to hitting the target, with one going wildly astray. Well - it was the aft torpedo room crew that needed the testing. A good skipper owns his shots, so I politely suggest to the forward room that they have the settings correct on two of their torpedoes. They both hit and both go off, sinking the target. So far, so good.
Halloween night, under half a waning moon, and I'm called to the deck by the XO. The largest group of ships we've seen so far in the war is heading right for us! With a chance to surface in the middle of the convoy, I decide to wait and let them come to us.
The boat surfaces, and I line up two targets fore and two aft while ordering course and speed. That's when our veteran submarine decides to show its age, as smoke starts pouring out of Diesel #4. The escorts shine us up, and we're in big trouble!
After an extended period of DC's, we get away from the enemy ships. Moderate flooding is pumped out, and the batteries are restored to normal output. The periscope is wrecked, however, and there's no fixing it at sea. And we lost the convoy without taking a single shot.
Early into November, we find a pair of freighters and a minelayer at night. I take two surface shots at all three from medium range, flipping the boat for the 3rd pair. We get one explosion on a small freighter, which quickly sinks. The escort puts a shell right though the aft torpedo doors, but we manage to escape further damage. We are down to the gun and forward tubes on the surface.
On our final afternoon before heading back to base, the surface radar detects a lone ship. We close the distance, and indeed, a small freighter is sailing without protection. We chase it down and sink it with the deck gun.
We return to base without any further contacts.

We didn't see anything larger than 5500 tons and then on the last leg of the patrol we hit the jackpot with the Aircraft Carrier Shokaku. Used all of my remaining torpedoes and took some hull damage to take that big girl down.

October 7th 1942 Left Brisbane for our first patrol of the Java Sea
November 7th 1942 A month has passed and there had been ZERO enemy contact, but on the evening of the 7th, a small tanker and escort were identified and attacked from long range whilst surfaced. Only two of the four torpedoes fired from the bow tubes hit the small tanker and of them one was a dud, nevertheless it was enough to sink the Kyoei Maru. Three of the aft tube fish missed their target, but one ran straight and true and detonated to sink one of the escorts. We easily avoided detection and slipped away further into the night.
November 14th 1942 Exactly a week had passed since the last distraction, we had not bumped into anything else, then this evening a light was spotted off the port bow. After inspection a small freighter and escort wandered into our area at long range and all tubes forward and aft were fired whilst surfaced. All four torpedoes hit the smaller freighter and all four detonated, which was complete overkill and the ship sank within minutes, taking the Iwashiro Maru to the sea bed. One of the escorts was hit amidships by three fish; with two being duds, the remaining torpedo did the job and the escort was no more. As predicted we remained undetected, so once again, slipped away in the night.
November 25th 1942 Arrived in Brisbane, Australia, after traversing the rest of the Arafura Sea and finally getting to the Coral Sea with no enemy contact on our way to the mainland.
USS Haddock will be ready for a new patrol in January 1943.
