Patrol After Action Reports are due no later than June 17th, 2017. June 4th 1942Good morning gentlemen, I won't take up much of your time, as I know that you are preparing to get underway. We have all patrol areas covered this month apart from the China Sea; but please just ensure that if your future patrol is in the China Sea, then you will need to remember that you will be in shallow waters and as a result, you will not be able to dive towards or below test depth. The Japs lost the Battle of the Coral Sea and Tokyo would like a trophy from the US. make sure it isn't you and your crew. For most of you, this is only your third patrol, so there is no need to take silly chances. Remember your training and use the experience of your last patrol to guide you and your crew back home next month. God speed. - Captain Lyndon Woodbury - SUBRON Commander

Boat Name and ID: USS Seal SS-183 Commanders Name: Oscar Garrard Patrol Assignment: Java Sea Successful Patrol: Yes Number of Freighters or Tankers Sunk: 1 (Nichinan Maru #2, 5200 tons) Number of War Ships Sunk: 0 Capital Ships Sunk: 0 Total Tonnage Destroyed: 5,200 Special Assignment Completed: NA Refit Time: 2 months (2 hull damage), Ready in October 1942 Awards Requested: Battle Star, SCPI
Seal arrived in her Java Sea patrol area in mid-June with no troubles. A week later, the night watch spotted lights on the horizon - a lone DD was traveling along the coastline. I emptied the aft tubes at the Kishinami, but no hits. (One dud went under the DD.) It was a heavy sea, and the DD didn't notice the torpedo tracks. We could only watch it continue down the coast, out of range.
Almost 3 weeks passed with no sightings, and the calendar flipped over to July, but we finally saw a freighter with a DD escort come into view after dusk. Thus began another extended engagement, full of worthless torpedo warheads, extended depth charging, and a little luck in the end for the boat. Our first shot was on the surface at night, a medium range attack. 2 fish at the freighter, 2 at the DD, and then a quick flip to fire the aft 4 at the freighter. Plenty of hits on the freighter, but all duds. The DD was quick to locate us and landed some gunfire that holed the fuel tanks - bad news, as it helped the Japanese skipper to land 2 rounds of DC nearby, knocking out the dive planes and a diesel engine. I risked a deep dive to try and evade detection before taking damage that could force the boat to surface. Thankfully, it worked.
Chief Engineer Daniels somehow stopped our fuel leak, and we could continue on patrol. The dive planes were jammed solid, and the engine was a pile of junk, but the boat could still fight. Some good luck allowed us to keep in contact with the freighter, and a second round of 4 fish was fired at it a few hours later, before dawn. More duds. The DD got more charges close to us before moving back to shadow the freighter, but they did no real damage.
We had one more opportunity to fire at the freighter in daylight, and I did so. Risky, with no dive planes and torpedo tracks, but I remembered the "disappointment" of the brass at boats returning with no victories. We had to get this ship, so I took the shot. One of our torpedoes finally exploded, slowing down the freighter some. Somehow the DD missed the clues and did not find us.
At its reduced speed, the freighter was easily followed into the evening, with the DD staying close by. We had 4 torpedoes left, so I risked closing to blank range and surfacing to fire them. The last torpedo fired had a faulty magnetic detector, and it was the one that caused a large explosion in the freighter, breaking it in two. The DD moved to rescue sailors, instead of looking for us.
We stayed on patrol for as long as our reduced fuel supply allowed, hoping for gunnery targets, but only an escorted freighter was spotted. Seal returned to base with no other sightings.
I formally request an inquiry into the torpedo detonator problems - it is ridiculous to need 18 torpedoes to sink *1* ship.

Boat Name and ID: USS Defiant SS-1764 Commanders Name: Benjamin Sisko Patrol Assignment: Solomons Successful Patrol: Yes Number of Freighters or Tankers Sank: 1 (Dokan Maru - 2300 tons) Number of War Ships Sank: 1 (DD Hayanami - 2100 tons) Capital Ships Sunk: 0 Total Tonnage Destroyed: 4400 Special Assignment Completed: N/A Refit Time: 1 month (no hull damage, 1 system repair needed) Awards Requested: SCPI Gold Star, Battle Star
The Defiant continues to enjoy successful, if not spectacular, patrols.
We arrived at the Solomons Islands with no incident. We were not able to find any contacts for several weeks. Halfway through the patrol, we came upon the 2100 ton DD Hayanami. As contact was made at night, the decision was made to engage rather than takes the chance of not finding any targets the rest of the patrol. Defiant approached to medium range and fired all 6 forward torpedoes. The Hayanami was faster than expected and 5 of the torpedoes missed. However, the last torpedo found it's mark and must have hit the magazine as the ship went down and we were able to escape without being detected.
Several days later, 2 small freighters with an escort were spotted during daylight. We tracked the ships until night and engaged firing 3 torpedoes at each ship. All 3 torpedoes were on target on the 2300 ton Dokan Maru. Only 2 explosions were noted but it was more than enough to sink the Dokan. Unfortunately, only 1 torpedo was on target againt the Tosei Maru and it failed to detonate. We were not able to escape the escort but only suffered minor damage to an electric engine and the SD radar. The chief engineer was able to fix the engine but the SD Radar would have to wait until we arrived back in Brisbane. We successfully followed the Tosei but were not able to sink or even damage it due to faulty torpedoes.
Perhaps we should have attempted to stick with the Tosei longer as we made no further contacts through the end of the patrol. On the way back to Brisbane, Japanese aircraft were spotted but even without the SD radar we were able to submerge in time to avoid an attack.
I would like to second Commander Gerrard's request for a formal inquiry into the torpedo detonator issues.

I only had 2 encounters. 1 was a convoy which included a 14500 ton boat and a 6000 ton boat. I tried to damage both but only had successful damage on the bigger one. I had to take some risks because the escort stuck around and took out some of my torpedo tubes. I did manage to sink that big boat in the end. I also ran across the BB Ise capital ship! With my hindered forward tubes, I launched everything I could and only managed 1 damage, then had to let her go because I ran out of to torpedoes and she made a run for it.

Boat Name and ID: USS Cuttlefish Salmon Class Commanders Name: Lcdr Don Henley (Gregory Smith) Patrol Assignment: Solomons Successful Patrol: No Number of Freighters or Tankers Sank: (Include ship name) 0 Number of War Ships Sank: (Include ship name) 0 Capital Ships Sunk: (Include ship name) 0 (but DAMAGED the CV Hiyo....) Total Tonnage Destroyed: 0 Special Assignment Completed: N/A Refit Time: Standard one month. Awards Requested: None. Very hairy patrol. Started off with no contacts for the first two weeks, then we encountered the Kimikawa Maru, an armed Auxiliary with escort. Fired a full spread, one hit, no detonations. Continued patrolling....getting low on diesel and food when WOW! it's the CV Hiyo. Unfortunately, it's daytime, meaning even IF I wanted to fire my aft two torpedoes, I can't. It's just got to be a spread of four. Not quite yet suicidal enough to go to close vs. a warship, I opt for a medium submerged attack. Two hits! One detonation! (our first exploding torpedo of the war, I might mention.) And....a single point of damage. Naturally I roll 12 for detection so it's +1 damage. 2 hits. The batteries and a diesel. Now it's +2 to detection(warship/previous) ....and I roll a modified 12. Flooding, and the XO gets a nasty cut on his head. The third depth charging is no less than FIVE hits....flooding, engine, batteries (again, for no effect) and.....fuel tanks. I'm thinking this is the end when I stare down at a set of snake eyes for my 4th detection roll. We slink off, pump out the water, fix everything, and head for the barn. I really, really need to sink something. This is getting embarrassing Greg
