Boat ID: USS Sea Cat Successful Patrol: No* Number of Freighters or Tankers Sank: 0 Warships/Capital Ships Sank: 0 Total Tonnage Destroyed: 0 Special Assignment Completed: NA Refit Time: 1 month (no damage), back in service October 1945 Awards Requested: World War II Victory Medal
Sea Cat left Pearl Harbor in early July, bound for the Japanese home islands. The trip there was uneventful, and our patrol area was also devoid of anything but our aircraft during the day, and us during the night.
Twice we had radar contacts leaving the bay we were assigned to watch, and twice they ended up as ghosts. (I rolled two sixes, which are No Encounter in 1945)
On August 15th, Pearl Harbor informed us that the Japanese had surrendered. For reasons only known to the brass, Sea Cat was ordered to head for Fremantle and stand down from offensive operations. I let the crew celebrate for the rest of the day, and then set our new course for our last trip "home"
We still kept our guard up, of course, to defend the boat from hostiles who might not have the message to quit fighting, and any other over-eager Friendly Fire incidents, but the trip was memorable. The joy, and relief, of the men was a sight to see, and the crossing of the Equator was a day-long expression of the end of up to 3 1/2 years of fighting.
Arriving at Fremante, Austraila, in early September, the crew looks forward to some extended R+R, and then a return to peacetime activities. To go - Home.
It's been a fun campaign, I look forward to the next one, and count me in.
* The surrender of Japan could be seen as a "successful" patrol!

July 2nd 1945 Having left Pearl and out to sea, we headed for another Empire patrol.
July 11th 1945 Reached patrol area and had zero contact with the enemy.
July 13th 1945 Received a message that a B-17 had gone down and that chutes had been seen over the water. Their lifeboat had worked and we picked up three of the crew from the “Sally Sue”: Sgt’s Williams and Edwards; the waist gunners and 2nd Lt Tanner; the Bombardier.
August 1st 1945 After hearing the tales from the fly boys, I believe the crew and I have a better chance in a tin can under the water, rather than in the sky. Just after lunch, contact was made and after identification; the Seizan Maru #2 was to be our first target and its escort our first evasion. I risked waiting to evening, but it paid off. After surfacing at long range and readying the Mk18’s from the bow tubes, all six fish were targeted; three at each ship. Only two torpedoes struck the hull of the freighter, but this resulted in the ship listing to port and the coup de grace had been completed. The fast moving escort took a hit from one torpedo and the back end just disappeared, with little chance for the crew to jump overboard. The NAC Jammer was deployed, but failed to work. Fortunately the escort had missed their detection opportunity and the Green Bay slipped away into the night.
August 5th 1945 From the light on the horizon, the silhouettes of the FF Ioshima and a few escorts had been spotted by the watch crew. Because of the speed of the frigate, I fired four eels at it and only two at the escort. Only two of the three torpedoes that hit the fast moving ship detonated, but she exploded just as it started to turn. The escort was hit by only one torpedo, which caused it to sink by the stern.
August 8th 1945 With little fuel left, I decided to head for home, even though we had half of a full compliment of torpedoes onboard.
August 18th 1945 Arrived back at Pearl Harbor, after traversing the rest of the Tropic of Cancer with no contact on our way back to the Hawaiian Islands. Refit will be completed during September.
USS Green Bay will be ready for the October patrol.
